Specializing in Dyslexia Intervention and Structured Literacy — warm, evidence-based one-on-one tutoring that meets each child where they are.
Sun & Flower Tutoring, LLC is my private practice in downtown Willow Glen, CA. I offer customized lessons, both in person and virtually, for learners of all ages. Through careful planning and evidence-based teaching, I tailor instruction so every child can reach their reading potential.
I've built a warm, supportive environment where children develop confidence in their reading — and in themselves. Although I specialize in Dyslexia Intervention, my expertise benefits all learners. Reading can, and should, be a pleasure for all!
Beyond working with children, I also coach teachers, hold parent instructional sessions, and lead professional training rooted in the science of reading.
Diagnoses of dyslexia, ADHD, and reading difficulties are rising sharply. A specialist tutor isn't a luxury — for many families, it's the turning point that changes everything.
Something is happening in classrooms across America. Parents are noticing it. Teachers are overwhelmed by it. And pediatricians are diagnosing it at rates that would have been unimaginable a generation ago. Approximately 1 in 5 students has a language-based learning difference — including dyslexia, dysgraphia, or auditory processing disorder — yet the vast majority go unidentified until second or third grade, long after the most effective window for intervention has passed.[1]
Meanwhile, ADHD diagnoses in school-age children have climbed steadily. The CDC estimates that approximately 9.4% of U.S. children ages 2–17 have received an ADHD diagnosis — a figure that has grown substantially over the past two decades.[2] These conditions frequently overlap: research suggests 30–50% of children with dyslexia also show signs of ADHD, compounding the challenge for students and the educators trying to support them in classrooms of 25 or more.[3]
Decades of cognitive neuroscience research point to a clear conclusion: the brain is most responsive to structured reading instruction between the ages of 4 and 8. During these early years, systematic phonics instruction can build the neural pathways for decoding far more efficiently than the same instruction delivered later. A 2018 study in Neuropsychologia found that early intervention produced measurable changes in brain activation patterns associated with reading fluency — changes that were significantly harder to achieve in older students.[4]
A skilled reading specialist doesn't simply help a child memorize sight words. They build the full phonological foundation — phonemic awareness, phonics, syllable patterns, morphology — that enables independent decoding of any word a student encounters, for life.
A general tutor helps with homework. A reading specialist changes the trajectory of a child's academic life. The distinction is diagnostic precision and instructional design. Before a single lesson begins, a qualified Structured Literacy specialist assesses exactly where a child's skills break down — phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, or comprehension — and builds a systematic, cumulative instructional plan tailored to close each gap in the right sequence.
For children with dyslexia or ADHD, this individualized approach is essential. Many of these students haven't tried hard enough — they've been taught through methods that don't align with how their brains process language. The International Dyslexia Association notes that Structured Literacy approaches are the only methods with consistent research support for students with dyslexia.[5] The right instruction, delivered consistently one-on-one, doesn't just improve scores. It rebuilds the child's belief in themselves.
The benefits of early tutoring extend well beyond reading metrics. Children who receive targeted literacy support in the early grades demonstrate improved self-regulation, greater academic risk-taking, and stronger performance across all subjects — because literacy underpins every area of learning. A child who reads with confidence approaches science, history, and math from an entirely different starting point.
If your child is showing signs of a reading struggle — reversing letters past kindergarten, avoiding books, guessing at words by the first letter, or expressing frustration about school — that's not a phase to wait out. That's a signal to act, and to act with the right expertise.
Sun & Flower Tutoring specializes in exactly this kind of early, structured intervention. Ms. Brittany's initial consultation is framed as a fun, game-based session — children rarely realize they're being assessed. From that session, a personalized instructional roadmap is built for your child.
